Wright & Jack start: predicted Rangers XI to face Ajax
Rangers' Dutch manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst (L) speaks with Rangers' English midfielder John Lundstram (R) during a training session at Murray Park, in Auchenhowie, on the outskirts of Glasgow, on September 6, 2022 on the eve of their UEFA Champions League Group A football match against Ajax Amsterdam. With it all said and done, who is Giovanni likely to pick to take the field in Amsterdam this evening?

Ibrox Noise takes you through our predicted XI for the club’s long-awaited return to the Champions League:

Goals:

Well Gio’s already confirmed, effectively, that it will be McLaughlin. We obviously don’t agree with this but that’s what he said. We’d be absolutely staggered now if either Robby or Allan get the nod.

Defence picks itself:

Tavernier, Goldson, Sands, Barisic. Anything different in there would be a genuine shock.

Midfield:

It’s Lundstram and a partner, maybe two. Gio will either go with the ill-fated 4-3-3 disaster he chose at Parkhead or resort to his tried and tested European 4-2-3-1 and we’d hope for that.

Meaning the partner will be one of Jack, Kamara or Davis. Davis was extremely poor on Saturday, as was Kamara. Jack may surprise us all with the nod for this one. He and Lundstram can play together. And Kamara won’t be hungry, having missed out on his move to Nice.

Attack:

So unless another surprise is in store, Kent is on the left, and Tillman will be central. The injury to Lawrence reduced options for the right, meaning once again it’s between Arfield and Wright. Of course that side of attack faces Bassey and Blind, so Gio may want speed there and give the nod to Wright. But if he surprises us all with another 4-3-3 then it changes things. We hope not.

Up front:

Obviously Colak. He is still bang in form and has been sensational. Morelos has in no way earned a starting jersey.

So your Ibrox Noise predicted XI?

McLaughlin; Tavernier, Goldson, Sands, Barisic; Lundstram, Jack; Kent, Tillman, Wright; Colak.

Defence and goals remain an Achilles heel but it is what it is.
