The return of Leon Balogun at Rangers is heavily popular

The Leon Balogun story recently was heartwarming, as the former Rangers defender attended Ibrox as a fan for the Union return.

Regulars know we were huge fans of the Nigerian, best defender at the club alongside Helander, but sadly like Helander desperately unable to retain fitness.

It’s why he was let go.

Balogun was just available too little, despite his ability, and let’s face it, he had a lot of ability.

No defender we had was quicker in the sprint (yes, including Bassey) burst than Balogun, and the way he kept zippy Kyoto silent as a RB in the Old Firm lives long in the memory.

He just couldn’t stitch together a run of games, such was his frailness for remaining healthy.

And with his deal expired, he had no chance of getting a new one.

And it was a damn shame, because Ibrox Noise and most of the fans took hugely to him.

His attendance at Ibrox the other night showed he really is one of us – didn’t just walk away from the club on being freed, he came back and was not shy about telling us.

We really hope the lad finds a club soon, and that he can keep the fitness up to play more for them than he did for us.

There is just one mystery about Balogun – why did we let him go but signed equally injury-prone John Souttar?

Curious.

  1. That’s a great shout, Leon should have stayed with us, fabulous player when fit, but Mr Souttar will never be off of the treatment table like Jacko who we all love and adore, nowadays l pray he goes somewhere else to free up a wage as we will be lucky to get 10 games a season out of

  2. Love the big man. Knew exactly what being a get was all about from day dot. Think the homegrown factor is the only thing in soutar’s favour. He’s had a shaky start to say the least but still think he’s a decent CB. Would take balogun all day long though if it was on a small wage with pay as you play bonus type thing🤔

  3. Souter was signed as right sided centre back as we were convinced Goldson was going. Balogun was worthy of another contract as we can’t get Helander fit enough to last more than 6 games.
