We had to have a little chuckle at full time. While there were 99% of Rangers fans only interested in celebrating the monumental win in Holland last night, and all that it meant, a bizarre 1% felt it was better to pick fights over individual players who have been criticised in recent times.

As we explain here, a few misguided souls slaughtered Ibrox Noise over our ‘criticism’ of James Sands. As regulars know, we’re one of the few to back him unconditionally as a defender.

But we do admit we’ve been harsh on Jon McLaughlin, Connor Goldson and Glen Kamara, not to mention Scott Wright and Fashion Sakala.

At full time, some of the first comments we got were point scoring jibes by some bitter-minded fans more interested taking pot shots at fellow supporters for our comments on McLaughlin. Not Goldson, mind, just Mclaughlin. And, farcically, Sands.

Do we stand corrected on Goldson or McLaughlin?

No, one swallow does not a summer make, and we’ve seen over four years of Goldson at Rangers to know what he is and isn’t. That he had a better match last night doesn’t automatically absolve him of his sins, but it does make up for some of it. As we said before, if he keeps that up and continues to defend properly and not cost the side all the time, we will forget this rather poor spell he’s had and back him to the hilt.

As for McLaughlin, again, he’s capable of having one great match, but doing it more often than not is the catch. This was his best display, but to say he is suddenly clearly good enough to be Rangers’ goalie is pushing it. It is Gio’s decision and we’ve never understood it. We’re happy to be wrong if he keeps on playing at this level.

Kamara… we’ve always known he could play this well, and he rolled back the months/years to produce a stellar display. This guy is capable of being world class and he showed it last night. Whether he played for a move or for his club we do not know, but his value sure rose anyway. This Glen Kamara is undroppable but which Kamara will he be next Rangers match?

Wright – honest wee player, great impact sub, will always hurt teams with his pace. We have never said anything else about him. He’s just not up to being a starter.

Lastly Sakala – his cameo did nothing for his chances at Rangers. He’s surplus.

But it’s Goldson and McLaughlin you’re most interested in. We’re more wrong about them than we were pre kick off yesterday, but they’ve still got to totally win us over. We doubt they really care though!

  1. Here’s something controversial for you.

Goldson is the best CB we have had since 2012!

Based on consistency, fitness, availability, reliable, value for money, appearances, performances. Yes Helander and Balogun were technically better but where are they now. Yes it’s frustrating that’s he undroppable and of course he makes mistakes but he’s the best we’ve got!

  2. Now that we have cash ,we must invest in a proven goalie ,defender and another striker ,or it will come back and bite us in the arse over a season .
Well done the 3 players who have been critiziced since start of season ,they were very good ,however I have my doubts over a full season .
