Ally McCoist’s claim this morning that the fee for Joe Aribo is ‘strange’ is in itself strange, but we’d never deny the man his right to opinion.
Is the fee ‘strange’?
Some fans are questioning it, yes – suggesting £6M is a bit low, but in reality, the final number could reach £15M or more with sell on and addons topping it up.
It’s an initial £6M, just like Patterson was an initial £12M (rising to £16M), and like Patterson will rise with clauses.
The expectation is that Aribo will impress at Southampton and within a year or two the big PL sides will look at him and make a move.
In other words, he’ll do a Virgil van Dijk and go to a big six club in 18 months+ for a potential £50M+ and Rangers will cut a slice of that, ala Celtic with their circa £12M for the Dutchman when he switched to Liverpool.
So, in reality, if Rangers secure a solid sell on percentage, Aribo’s eventual fee could actually be anything close to the £20M he is worth.
£6M fee, £4M in appearance addons, and a percentage of the sell on meaning it could be anything in the end.
But that depends on him stepping up and hitting the kind of heights with Southampton he flirted with at Rangers, on a consistent basis.
That is another matter entirely, but if he can do it, Rangers will make a lot of cash down the line.
I think its really good business from a situation that shouldn’t been allowed to develop by the board. I wish the lad all the very best. I’m sure he’ll rise to the PL and we can get further financial reward as will he .
Also much like patterson if he flops its 6 million ,lets hope its the 20 million ,we can dream .
