While Rangers’ draw with Belgian side Union Gilloise is worthy of a lot of attention given what it means, what struck Ibrox Noise today more when the draw was being carried out in Nyon was that for the first time since 2009, we were hearing the glorious Champions League theme with Rangers involved.
We cannot recall if the theme was used in broadcast last year for Rangers’ ill-fated Malmo adventure, given that was just a qualifier (broadcast on Premier) but it certainly was today for the draw, and the theme absolutely screamed at us.
It has been 12 years since Rangers competed in the Champions League, and an entire generation of fans have grown up without ever seeing our club at that level.
This has been the longest wait in CL history for a formerly established CL team to return to this level after a lengthy absence – and it’s music we’ve missed more than we would have ever admitted.
Whether we make it to the group stage or not, it’s absolutely wonderful to have heard the theme for an occasion we’re directly involved in.
Too few fans these days have experienced what the older generations did for 20 years – that theme more often than not in midweek.
Well it’s come back – let’s make it stay.
I was trying to get my boy to listen out for the Champs League tune when Malmo lined up at Ibrox, as he hadn’t heard it before himself, but we couldn’t hear it all. We were loud, as per usual, but you could still hear the Europa League music at other games. I honestly don’t think they played it.
It’s not played at qualifiers Spark, only for group and beyond.
