Alfredo Morelos and a new Rangers contract

Alfredo Morelos entering into contract negotiations, as one national tabloid has put it, is no surprise. Indeed our info is he’s been offered a contract but as with the complexities involved with both a patriotic South American in Europe and the ambitions he harbours, it’s not a case of simply signing across the dotted line.

Morelos has already signed a couple of extensions since he joined in 2017, helping the club get maximum dollar for him in event of a move, especially when he was particularly vocal about one.

So while he sees his future in the Premier League, he’s done pretty right by Rangers, and from what we understand, he wants that loyalty rewarded.

He is said to want some protection in the contract which will allow him to negotiate with other clubs with a bit more freedom than players usually get, and in truth we don’t begrudge him this demand.

Alfredo Morelos has been at Rangers half a decade, and he deserves the right to choose his own future.

If he feels it’s time for him to make a move to the PL, there would be no bitterness from Ibrox Noise – just perception of a player ready for a change.

Second only to James Tavernier and joint with Ryan Jack for tenure in Govan, Morelos has given Rangers absolutely plenty, and while he used to talk a wee bit too much about his future in the PL, he’s really stopped doing that the past 24 months and got on with his football.

The reality is he is happy at Rangers, but does want to play at a higher domestic level – we don’t have any issue with that, and not just those two extensions but he’s given us a lot on the pitch as well.

He has no debt to pay at Ibrox.

So if Morelos wants a few wee conditions and clauses in his deal we’d say he’s earned them, and Rangers should accommodate him.

Or risk losing the man for a modest fee this summer or nothing next.
