Calvin Bassey to Aston Villa resurfaced today after press reports strongly linked Rangers with interest in one of Villa Park’s promising youngsters in the form of 20-year old striker Cameron Archer.

Obviously some press are speculating based on Steven Gerrard’s links to Bassey himself, but the makeweight story of £5M-rated Archer is hinting at a £20M plus player deal for the Nigeria international to make his way south.

And if Rangers end up with a 8 goals and assists in 20 appearances striker, it might not be the worst deal.

Bassey’s stock continues to increase, with every passing international he plays for his country, on top of his sky high reputation earned with two stellar finals in a row for Rangers, leaving the defender a coveted asset and highly in demand.

Villa do seem to be the front runners, but as their manager Gerrard said about Archer, anyone who wants the striker better be prepared to dig deep in their pocket.

Well, the same certainly applies to Gerrard if he wants Rangers’ star defender, given his market value is increasing all the time.

While it is unlikely Rangers would get the full £35M the lad is likely worth these days, £20M plus a £5M player in a position Rangers need strength in depth in would not be unwelcome.

But as with all stories this summer window, time will tell.
