New deal in the works as Rangers try to keep megastar Bassey

Rangers’ attempts to hold onto Calvin Bassey have taken a boost after Aston Villa’s addition of Sevilla star Diego Carlos probably ended any interest Steven Gerrard had in his own former Rangers signing, while other speculation over the Nigerian star has gone quiet amid rumours of a massive new contract at Ibrox.

The £30M rated defender, who has had three stellar performances in a row to skyrocket his market value, had been interesting Villa, German giants Dortmund, Munich and Leipzig, plus PL colossi Chelsea, amid rumours of a transfer record sale.

But recent information is lending itself to the notion Bassey is going nowhere, and is set to fall in line with Scott Arfield, Steven Davis and Connor Goldson by signing a new deal instead, with a massive wage rise.

Bassey, as a Leicester City fringe player, was signed on an extremely modest salary for Rangers, said to be barely £5,000pw, but Rangers absolutely want to keep the stopper who is only going to get better, and would be interested in a new deal at a wage more fitting of his development.

There is also extremely likely to be a bumper release clause in the region of £30M.

But it’s Villa’s signing of Carlos in the same position for around the same price which hints at good news for Rangers, and the fact also that it was done so quickly while any Birmingham interest in the 22-year old has gone quiet.

He’s one Rangers would certainly like to keep.

  1. I dont know about “megastar” ? surely half a season of playing very well does not entitle you to such a moniker and it must not be forgotten the guy made 2 bad mistakes in EUL final alone .I think the progress made by bassey in second half of season is fantastic as is his sheer will to win and attitude ,however I am not sure there is load of people battering the door down to pay 20 million or over ,and i think we may be all going over the top a bit .
I think he will sign on improved terms (no massive wages ,rangers just dont do now )and i would be delighted if this the case ,also if we can get prolific goalscorer I would pay great money for this type of player as imo we would have won league and EUL with the chances created last year and in final .it is a MUST for me .

  2. Guy is a fantastic player,at the back, or down the wing with pace. Just like Kent, he can run and cross the Ball with accuracy, when Morales is fit Rangers will be an unstoppable force, I just hope that Van Bronkhurst can get us a real no.9 to get us through the qualifying stage’s and into the Champions League proper then we will see who’s the best team in Scotland and hopefully watch Rangers at least get by the group stage’s.
