Post-Morelos stat shock forces a major Rangers rethink

The loss of Alfredo Morelos cannot have been held more clearly than the shock stat from Portugal whereby, for the first time in almost 15 years in Europe, Rangers failed to have a single shot on target in the entire 90 minutes.

For all the side’s gigantic performances and stunning results this season, and despite in many ways playing actually half decent on their travels in the continent v Carvalho’s side, the side never managed to make a single shot test the goalie, far less score.

Now there is a caveat – this does only apply to group matches and beyond, so there may well have been a qualifier or two since 2007 when Rangers didn’t test the goalie.

But it’s a seriously worrying stat that without Alfie, not a single shot counted and it was a nearly 15-year proud record that went tumbling as a result.

The reality was the performance was not awful, we have played worse.

But there really was a lot missing, a clinical edge, defensive stability and robustness, that this just wasn’t a typical European Rangers performance, unless you’re going back to the post-93 days under Walter in the CL where some of our displays were drastic.

No, the lack of Morelos changed everything, and Sakala certainly wasn’t up to the task on his own – he’s not a target man and cannot play that role.

Roofe isn’t either, none of our strikers are.

But then what of Kent, Arfield and the rest?

No one managed a shot on target – the only one who did was Scotty, and it was flagged redundant for offside.

For the return leg Gio needs to rethink the formation, because going forward like this without a main striker in his usual system simply won’t work.

  1. I wish fans would stop rubbishing the team, aye sure we’ve not hit the heights of last year, but we’ve lost the same amount of games as the other mob, its draws that’s killing us, we’re going well in Europe and need everyone to a man behind the team on Thursday.
