Gio must go two up top for Rangers

Call us bonkers, but the loss of Alfredo Morelos means Giovanni van Bronckhorst has to completely change the system because we can no longer player with one man up front.

We quite simply do not have a single centre-forward aside the Colombian capable of playing that line alone, which gives some idea of how poor recruitment has been.

Which ultimately suggests that the formation has to change.

We quite simply need to play with two men up front, and we need to implement the system immediately.

We do not have a single striker who can play the target man role, and we can’t ever recall a single formation in world football which ever used speedy or dinky lone strikers – they’re always big strong guys who can hold up the ball or win it in the air.

So we need to change our way of playing, it’s that simple.

4-4-2? 3-5-2?

Sakala and Roofe together has a chance. Both are good for mobility and are hard workers. Both are also pretty good finishers.

Working as a duo might be Rangers’ only answer, and it’s down to Gio how to implement it.

We’d go 3-5-2.

We’d have McGregor in goals, a back three of Bassey, Balogun and Goldson, two wing backs in Barisic and Tavernier, and a midfield three of Jack or Kamara, alongside Lundstram and Ramsey, with Sakala and Roofe up front.

Barisic and Tavernier would be pivotal for service, getting in cross after cross, and while Roofe and Sakala aren’t great in the air, the service would be there if the crosses were lower.

Add Ramsey supporting from midfield and we can flood the opposition box while still leaving 4 at the back in the 3 stoppers and a DM or two.

End of the day, we have to try something different because one up top without Alfie isn’t going to cut it.

Or… we’re talking rot and Gio’s got it covered?
