Is this finally to be the year Rangers win a cup again?

Rangers were drawn on Monday v Dundee in the quarter-final, with all sides left in the tournament being SPL – the top 7, and second-bottom Dee.

This does mean the quality of the opponent is a little higher should Rangers navigate their way to the semis, with the likelihood being that the semi-finals will be both remaining Glasgow sides and Hearts and Motherwell, which is almost the literal top four aside Utd – Motherwell being the 5th.

But what of Rangers’ chances of securing our first Scottish cup triumph since 2009 and our first League Cup since 2011?

Rangers’ cup record since 2012 has been a complete disgrace, nothing to do with being in the lower divisions for any of that.

Worse teams than lower-league Rangers have got to finals and won them in the past decade and Rangers’ only finals in 10 years were to Hibs and Celtic. Of a possible 20 cup finals, this is ludicrous.

Even the new era of Steven Gerrard couldn’t improve on this, and while we say every year ‘it’s high time we end this’ we have to be wary of being so demanding.

Yes, we SHOULD win this cup, at long last, but there’s a bit of a hoodoo over the whole thing now, a bit of a jinx, and Rangers seem to always fall short in such tournaments.

Giovanni can prove himself to be a real cut above every manager by taking a trophy.

And boy would we love that.
