Rangers chief under surprise pressure as fans hit out

We’re surprised to see Sporting Director Ross Wilson under a little bit of pressure from some fans and fan groups, with some curious criticism suggesting he’s signed nothing but duds and he needs to prove himself.

Wilson has been nothing but praised since he took charge, with some brilliantly shrewd transactions (Hagi and Bacuna being very smart especially) and other additions under him which have certainly not hurt us (Roofe, Balogun and Bassey especially).

But literally over the last month or two, as Rangers slogged into yet another post new year lull, Wilson seems to be coming under sudden criticism and needing to ‘prove’ himself, as if apparently being a huge part of 55 and a Euro run or two wasn’t evidence enough.

Fans seem to have suddenly slapped the ‘Mark Allen’ fallacy on him, where the signings which pleased them a month ago are now forgotten, and the dud additions are the ones he’s being castrated for.

Rangers, under any manager and sporting director, will always sign Bacunas, Simpsons, Barkers and Ittens – it’s not just a case of scouting the players you want and signing them, there’s infinitely more aspects to an addition than just getting good players.

There’s agent pressure, marketing, profit margins and plan b’s to name just 4 aspects which have absolutely nothing to do with football, which mean you might end up with Jack Simpson in your team even when you don’t actually want him.

And as soon as performances and results dip a little, it’s an easy target that invariably gets it. For now that appears to be Wilson.

We’re just surprised to see it this quickly, this level of fickle, and this unfairly, if we’re honest.

Rangers aren’t playing badly right now because of Ross Wilson, Rangers are playing badly right now because we just are, and always do post new year.

Maybe a few less scapegoats and a bit more support for everyone would go a long way?
