Not long after gushing about James Sands before his arrival at Ibrox, USA boss Gregg Berhalter has subsequently ditched the midfielder for the upcoming world cup qualifiers.

Only three weeks ago Berhalter said this:

“James has done a great job for us and played in some really big games. I think about his performances in the Gold Cup and the World Cup qualifiers and I think it is going to be a great opportunity for him to continue to grow at Rangers.”

So why he has now left the midfielder out of crucial world cup qualifiers we’re not sure. And no, before anyone asks, he’s not doing Rangers a favour – a national coach’s focus is his team, not a club, so this is tactical.

So we’re left wondering why this international player that the USA boss rates so highly is suddenly not good enough for his squad.

In reluctant defence of him, Sands has only actually played a single world cup qualifier up till now, and otherwise was on the bench for three or not called up at all.

So we’d admit he’s far from a USA first choice.

But the way his coach extoled his virtues we’d have assumed he had a bigger role for him in mind with the NT going forward.

Apparently not.

  1. Yeah yet another pointless fringe waste of money signing most likely, regardless of whether we have actually paid for the transfer of many of these players or not, we still pay their wages. Many of them hardly getting a game and then if so fail to do anything on the pitch. Obviously it’s his first game against the sheep but did absolutely nothing and I don’t think guys that can’t get a game for the United States should be signing for us at this point. I was fed up of these types of signings under Gerrard abd now gio is doing the same. Why not instead of signing 3 or 4 of these fringe players use that money to bring in a first team starter that will make Davis, kamala, tav, goldson etc raise their eyebrows rather than looking over & then just shrugging their shoulders?
