Veerman on/off to Ibrox is a simple question of…

There’s a tonne of press talk about Joey Veerman, with the Heerenveen midfielder known to want to leave the Dutch Eredivisie.

A bunch of clubs were interested in him in the last window, but De Superfriezen effectively priced him out of a move by demanding around €10M for him, which was too high for Rangers and Atalanta, not to mention Ajax (albeit same division).

Rangers, instead, opted for a truly sloppy seconds in Huddersfield’s Juninho Bacuna, who was a slight panic signing, very much like Brandon Barker had been in event of not getting Ryan Kent.

In this case, of course, Rangers did not get Veerman, and Bacuna is a pale imitation of what the Dutch star offers.

With the addition of Giovanni van Bronckhorst, talk is once again of the ex-Volendam mid making the switch to Govan, in light of his connection to our manager, being Dutch and all.

Gio is clearly going to look at his home market, and he has awareness of the Belgian league too, but does this mean Veerman is back on?

It’s a simple question of economics. Rangers do not have money right now, even if we can still secure players on deals like Hagi (£1M up front for a £4M player) and indeed Bacuna himself (£2M but paid off over time and as an initial free).

So nabbing a €10M player will not be easy. But Sporting Director Ross Wilson has pulled off some magical deals so far and he can do it again.

Does it mean we can get Veerman? We hope so. He’d be an excellent midfield addition.
