Sackings and struggles show how right Rangers were in big choice
We're glad glad he was the one unveiled that day....

With Jack Ross’s sacking and Callum Davidson’s massive struggles this season, Rangers’ brilliant appointment of GVB seems all the more shrewd given the fact the former two were tentatively in the mix to replace SG at one point.

True, once Gio’s name was in the hat, he was the only real candidate and he was the one us fans wanted, so Rangers knew it was an all-in situation. Van Bronckhorst or no one.

But the plight of Hibs and St Johnstone rooted to the bottom of the table and the fate of the former’s manager and the potential of the latter to lose his job too shows just how wise Rangers’ board were to avoid both and go for a world class manager to replace the outgone one.

Yes indeed, Ross and Davidson were both softly touted for the Rangers gig, in some quarters more than others, but quite simply neither of them are good enough.

In Ross’s case that’s obvious. He’s a midtable SPL manager and that’s it. There’s little debate there.

Davidson’s situation is a little trickier. Two domestic cups for the Saints last season was a nigh-on miracle, but it was telling during the summer that no English sides made a move to take him south. They did, however, snap up his two star men in Ali Crawford and Jason Kerr, which has effectively destroyed his side and exposed his managerial weaknesses.

Out of the cup at the semi final stage to a pretty weak Celtic where they might have hoped to defend their title, the Saints have looked dead on their feet this campaign and sit where their form deserves.

Davidson got exposed in Europe and exposed in the league. His tactics were too limited and now his best players are gone.

All we can say is we’re glad we didn’t go near him or Ross.

  1. I doubt we even considered either of them. Mid table SPL is not the place to find a Rangers manager. You will remember that before Gerrard there were fans shouting for Tommy Wright. Laughable now.
