“Interested” – press claim Villa talks with Rangers manager imminent

English tabloids claim Steven Gerrard is ‘interested’ in the Villa job and is open to listening to the Birmingham side’s proposal.

The further claim has been made that the Villa board will seek permission from Rangers’ board to talk to Gerrard and that will happen this week.

Whether Rangers’ board will grant permission depends just how ‘interested’ Gerrard sincerely is in listening to what Villa have to say, and if there’s accuracy in these reports, which are a lot, lot, lot more serious than the Newcastle links, then we can definitely expect an approach this week.

If there is truth that Gerrard seeks to hear what they have to say, Rangers’ board will likely grant him permission to do so – on the grounds that rejecting the approach may disquiet the manager who could feel a little put out.

But of course, equally, he dismissed Newcastle in a slightly derisory fashion by mocking the notion of his being unhappy at Rangers.

And he’s been very clear since he joined Rangers that the only club he was interested in after the Famous was of course Liverpool.

But we are realistic to know things change in football.

Gerrard has more than ‘served’ his apprenticeship in management, and is a fully-experienced boss now. He is a coveted coach who many PL sides are interested in.

But is he prepared to sacrifice a shot at the CL and 56 with a big budget for season 22/23 in order to take the career step into the PL?

Newcastle was definitely wrong for Stevie, and he was happy to dismiss them, but he’s been less vocal about doing so about Villa.

It’s given him something to think about, and while we know Rangers are a giant club, Villa, as Birmingham’s biggest, are not a diddy side themselves.

We watch and wait.

  1. I think you are wrong about the Newcastle job. He could’ve went in there and quite easily have improved them year on year and left with his reputation intact. Villa is different. They are a top ten club on the wane and have sold their captain and star player. If would be hugely difficult for him to take Villa much further and I think it would be a big mistake if he went. But he might.

  2. got to laugh at some of the story’s coming out he was nailed on for th Newcastle job now again villa same guys same storys I feel it will be the same outcome I just don’t see Gerrard walking away from his team mid season.. leaving rangers after 3-4 years with only 1 trophy would he be happy with that ??
