GVB has revealed a tactical command of Alfredo Morelos brought more from the Colombian than we’ve pretty much seen all year.
Astute observers of the game will have spotted Rangers retreated a little and lost some shape last night around the half hour mark, and a particular symptom of that was the striker coming back into the defensive midfield area.
Yes, it was helpful to see him aiding defence, but he was completely wasted there, and it was inexplicable to see him that deep.
And his manager spotted it, and immediately told him to get into the box at the other end, not our midfield, not our defence, but the final third and the penalty area.
It’s the first time we’ve seen Morelos go from his previous deep play into a more advanced position in one match, and it reaped dividends as he got a priceless double by playing in that berth instead.
All of last season, Rangers fans explained Morelos was just following his manager’s orders, and had been told to play deeper, but in fact, GVB’s comments indicate it’s actually indiscipline from the Colombian, wanting to be part of the play at all times, and coming deeper to be so.
The ex-boss clearly didn’t have the ability to make Alfie play in his rightful slot, and the Colombian deteriorated under him.
Barely half an hour into his first match as boss, Gio commanded the hitman forward, and that was that as he ran riot.
It just shows how Morelos needs to be managed properly.
Do that, you’ve got one of Europe’s best strikers on your hands.
Last season I thought Buff mastered the “Firmino” role but for some reason this season (along with many others) it just wasn’t clicking, he wasn’t being effective in any way bar the odd (very odd) goal. Last night we had the Bufalo we all love back, who is a menace to defenders and is right back and determined to lead this club to glory. It also helped him that those around him played with an intensity that we haven’t seen for months. Despite being top we had yet to hit the heights we expect from this side. That was much more like it all round!
