Reports claim Rangers are working seriously towards the January window by targeting Blackburn midfielder Joe Rothwell, 26.

The former England U20 international, an ex-Man Utd youth product, has spent his whole senior career in League One and the Championship and the box to box mid is said to be interesting Steven Gerrard with the winter window fast approaching.

His contract expires in the summer so he’s free to speak to other clubs in January, and Rangers see an opportunity to bolster the summer window early by bringing the former Oxford man in potentially at the start of the year.

We must admit this link isn’t one to excite us. Like George Edmundson, Brandon Barker and Jack Simpson, these levels of players are questionable on the face of it, and none of the above three were close to being successes at Ibrox, with huge doubts about Jack Simpson’s ability to be an exception.

As such, another player from the middle leagues in England isn’t one to thrill us, especially given his market value of barely £1.5M.

You might quote Millwall’s Jake Cooper and suggest he is also of the same calibre, but his entire career has been in upper Championship which is quite the hike over League One. He’s also worth at least £4M.

End of the day, this isn’t the most thrilling player we’ve been in for, but hey, what do we know.
