As Celtic drift aimlessly in 6th and Rangers soar in 1st, it gives some absolutely stellar indication of the impact of fine margins. To that end, it’s worth noting that despite their being so far behind, 6 points trailing behind the Famous, as we mentioned, Celtic (or others) are ahead of Rangers in literally every single stat there is, except the only one that truly counts.

But it goes deeper.

Celtic have by some distance the most goals in the division – a ludicrous 17, and they have conceded the joint lowest of 5, same as ourselves, Hearts, St Johnstone and Dundee Utd.

And yet they’re the ones deep in the bowels of midtable because of those fine margins.

Rangers are not at their best but are getting the grinding out results, while Celtic just aren’t.

So even despite being free-scoring, conceding so few, and dominating pretty much every match they play, they’re miles behind us.

This is the difference between champions and also-rans. Champions know how to grind an ugly 1-0 when playing awful. Also-rans will beat a bottom-feeding side down to 10 men 6-0 but come up short when it counts.

How bad are Celtic? Dreadful – deeply ineffective and trying too hard to be better.

What use are 17 goals scored and 5 conceded when you’re 6th?

Rangers have a decent 12 goals and 5 conceded and we’re top.

That says it all.

  1. As you say fine margins so let’s not get ahead of ourselves. The way we are playing things could change quite quickly. I remain confident we will get better but it’s how much damage we do before then.
