Borna Barisic’s status with Croatia is looking grim after the left back was once again omitted from his national team’s plans and found himself benched.
Manager Zlatko Dalic spoke pre-Euros about how Borna was his number one choice and had earned that in the Euro qualifiers, only to overlook him for Gvardiol, who wasn’t available this international break. Barisic was.
So Dalic put in Sosa instead, with Barisic benched yet again.
The Croat only got a little cameo this summer and otherwise barely got a touch of the ball, and since the Euros has been called up but overlooked completely for both of Croatia’s fixtures on the break.
From first choice pre-Euros Barisic is now just a squad player, and barely used.
From a selfish Rangers perspective it keeps him fit, but equally his morale must be rather on the floor now with the way his 2021 has gone – 55 was obviously magnificent but since then it’s not been the best for the Croat, with injury plus ‘omission’ at the Euros and now dropped from both club and country.
That’s right, Calvin Bassey has taken his place at Ibrox as well, and despite his return to some sort of form (he got an assist v Celtic) we don’t know if he’s going to be first choice going forward in Govan.
He certainly no longer is for his country.
