£8M man shines as Rangers toil to tough win
25th September 2021 Kilmac Stadium, Dundee, Scotland: Scottish Premiership football, Dundee versus Rangers Rangers manager Steven Gerrard gives instructions to his team PUBLICATIONxNOTxINxUK ActionPlus12325967 DavidxYoung

This is one of those rare occasions where Ibrox Noise is smug and annoying to proudly say ‘we told you so’.

That’s right, we were effectively the only fan group who never stopped believing in John Lundstram, and while we acknowledged his performances hadn’t been magical yet, we refused to turn on him like 99% of the fans did, and now that’s paying dividends after the ex-Utd man shone two matches running to be definitively Rangers’ best performer in recent fixtures.

It’s clear the lad needed a bit of time, but he is evidently benefitting from the resting of Steven Davis, who it’s starting to emerge he struggles to perform alongside.

His display today was strong and articulate – a strong 86% passing accuracy, as well as 3 dribbles, and a stunning 5 accurate long passes out of 10 not to mention some tackles and blocks confirmed this as his best outing yet, and he played a crucial role spreading the ball wide for the goal.

We didn’t just have Rangers fans smearing Lundstram as a donkey, Sheffield Utd supporters in their droves were eager to tell us how cack he was, and he would be a failure for us.

Sorry, we weren’t buying that a guy with that much PL and Championship experience with a market value above £8M was in actual fact ‘p*sh’.

He’s very much been made the scapegoat this season, but the biggest reasons for his troubles is that for some reason, he’s not a good foil for Davis. Indeed, we suspect he does the Davis role well alone, and had to adjust his game to fill in alongside the NI star.

Which is no diss to Davo, he’s been magical for us since his return, but he is aging now, and Lundstram has shone in the past two matches more than the former captain has all season.

We can only see John improving and digging those heels in.

He desperately wanted this move, wanted this manager, and ok, he didn’t get the CL he craved, but there’s still time for that one next season.

He’s now showing why we wanted him.

And silencing all the doubters.

  1. Being the best performer (debatable) from 2 diabolical team performances is hardly a triumph. The stats you’re throwing about for him today came against team who made the current celtic team look like peak-Barca. As for being an 8m player, dont make me laugh, show me 1 team who would pay 8m for him … you cant because if that team exsisted they would most certainly tried to get him while he was a freebie.

This summers business has been nothing short of a disaster, we chose to use our money for contract renewals and to maintain the current squad then hope by some miracle we qualified for CL group stage and use that money for 2/3 quality additions. Arse about face if you ask me

This squad and management have consistently proven they arent good enough, the new year collapses that are so routine now you could set your watch by them (even going for 55 we were pish from Jan onwards), the dismal showings in the cups, some truly daft transfers, continually overlooking our own youth and not being able to believe a word our own gaffer spouts is a farce.

  2. It wasn’t a very good performance again , and against a lot team . I thought Lundstram was a good signing and he will prove to be so. Let’s be honest you don’t need to be that much better to look half decent in poor quality Scottish Football. I’m more concerned about how Rangers and our so called star players are playing it’s not good enough. Still a win is a win .

  3. Could not agree more Stevie, I do believe Gerrard is being found out, in my opinion he has no tactical knowledge to [a] identify where we are failing in a particular game, and [b] tweak the system to achieve a positive result.Fed up hearing about the guy being a legend and his Liverpool connection, he is employed by Glasgow Rangers and as such at a press conference should only answer questions relative to Glasgow Rangers.I want to be wrong but I do feel he and his coaching staff have ran their course.
