As the world and his dog knows, 23-year old defender George Edmundson becomes the first major departure of the summer, the former Oldham man switching to Ipswich in a £1.5M deal.

The so-called Fridge, due to his robust physique (in truth he’s a unit) carried himself well as a Ranger, only making one rather notable blip during the worst of the Covid era.

Aside that, Edmundson did himself proud and never walked his time at Ibrox with anything other than dignity.

The blunt truth is he was some distance off being good enough – we quite liked his attitude, and he had some great distribution from the back, but while we know Stevie has his favourites, Edmundson was evidently not quite up to the level required.

If he was, something better than Ipswich (with all due respect) would have snapped him up. After all, if Dapo Mebude can get PL Watford, it really has nothing to do with a player’s prominence at a club, but his own ability.

And George came up a bit short in the end.

But he leaves with our best wishes – it wasn’t meant to be for him at Ibrox, at it isn’t for many players, and he once again joins the growing list of players who go out on loan and are subsequently done at Ibrox.

As we’ve said before, none have ever been exceptions to this rule under Gerrard, with our one glimmer of hope to the contrary being Stephen Kelly.

Edmundson didn’t stand a chance really.

But he loved his time at Ibrox, it was a dream for him to play for a club the size of Rangers, and he’ll never forget it.

We wish him the best.
