Rangers today announced a very predictable direction for Jermain Defoe’s career – player/coach.
If ever Rangers had one of the best management teams we could have hoped for in these modern times, it’s tactical genius Michael Beale, wise old consigliere Gary Mac, iconic head coach and manager Steven Gerrard and now a brilliant addition in experienced and highly respected pro himself Jermain Defoe.
The promotion for the former England striker is a massive fillip for both him and the club, and it had been long-expected he’d make his first step into coaching via exactly that role.
Defoe will be an outstanding addition to the management team, offering ‘boots on the ground’ knowledge as well as experienced consulting with the rest of the staff, all while being able to stick his boots on any moment for selection.
It’s a fantastic solution – he is obviously reaching the end of his viable playing career and this is his first tangible step into management.
It’s a move, indeed, which has been deeply popular throughout the fanbase, and there isn’t a fan around who thinks Defoe’s switch of roles isn’t a positive change.
His experience and the respect he commands will stand him in great stead and it’s perfect for Rangers going forward.
Good luck in your new role Jermain.
