As we all know, long-term link John Lundstram was recently released from relegated Sheffield United, and the tongues naturally started wagging about his potential for a Bosman up to Ibrox.
The 27-year old former England youth international has had a decent career – 62 PL appearances, 77 in the Championship, the midfielder is certainly not the worst player to cross Rangers’ transfer circle path recently, so a lot of fans put 2+2 to get 4 or 5 on this one.
Is there any real substance to this story? Not really – Stevie has never shown any interest in Lundstram, it’s a fan-generated story, based on a few press ditties and the fact he’s a huge admirer of Steven Gerrard, but he’s been pretty clear earlier this year that he had no intention of moving to Ibrox.
At that time anyway.
With United relegated, Lundstram’s status becomes free agent, albeit he was out of contract this summer regardless, and didn’t appear to be wanting a new deal with the Blades.
So his options are completely open.
In truth, Rangers are a bit of a prize now – Champions, CL, and Steven Gerrard plus that glorious stadium, we’re far more coveted than we maybe were a few years ago at a lower level.
And it could get Lundstram’s attention for sure – but equally Stevie has to want him, and the bottom line is the story is manufactured by fan sites and rumour mills, and seems to have no substance to it at all.
And no, before you ask, a Daily Record claim without foundation that Stevie is a big admirer isn’t really proof…
Wait you’ll see him paraded within days now…
