While Rangers’ brief hopes of loaning back former midfielder Billy Gilmour are at a reported end, they have been surprisingly replaced with relegation-doomed Sheffield United’s midfield star John Fleck, also a former Auchenhowie charge.

United, who are destined to go back down to the Championship, face asset stripping at the end of the season, and Fleck, who left in 2012 during Rangers’ crisis days, has been a standout performer at Bramall Lane the past 5 years and has 45 PL outings to his credit at age 29.

His recent form hasn’t been vintage (back issues) but he did assist the opening goal of United’s stunning win at Old Trafford and at 29 he’s got a tonne left to give.

He is certain not to want to be a Championship player next season and Rangers are reported to be monitoring him.

Of course, he’s not out of contract till 2023 so he wouldn’t be a Bosman and his market value is around £10M so he wouldn’t be an easy signature, but his situation is still of interest to Rangers and given the chance to secure an experience peak age PL performer we would be very tempted indeed.

We’ll see if this one happens…

  1. Please let’s not waste £10m on John Fleck. Especially at 29 with a dodgy back. He did manage to eventually turn his career around after drifting for a few years but I’m done waiting for John Fleck to fulfil his potential in a Rangers jersey.
