Horror in Paisley as Rangers crumble – player ratings
PAISLEY, SCOTLAND - DECEMBER 16: Conor McCarthy of St Mirren scores their team's third goal during the Betfred Cup Quarter-Final match between St Mirren and Rangers at The Simple Digital Arena on December 16, 2020 in Paisley, Scotland. The match will be played without fans, behind closed doors as a Covid-19 precaution. (Photo by Ian MacNicol/Getty Images)

Rangers’ sensational season has come to a horrific ‘end’ after the treble contenders were deservedly beaten by a well-organised St Mirren who outfought and outfoxed Steven Gerrard’s side.

Ibrox Noise gives you our ratings for a shocking night in Paisley.

McGregor:

Made a couple of good saves but will be gutted to have lost 3 goals. 6

Tavernier:

By a distance his worst performance this season, well marshalled by his opponents. Few crosses, but he did manage a sort of assist. Just not his night at all. 6

Goldson:

Amazing early goal and looked comfy for long spells but unravelled horribly and was done more than once on a bad night for the defence. 6

Balogun:

Didn’t look comfortable, and frankly after those initial few matches after he joined, never really has. 5

Bassey:

Proved why he’s no substitute for Barisic. Cost two goals, and was just out of his depth. 4

Zungu:

Some neat enough passing but lacked any kind of impact in the match. 6

Arfield:

Worked hard as he always does but didn’t get a tonne of the ball anywhere where he could make a difference. 6

Aribo:

This system just doesn’t suit him. Can’t do any damage, and doesn’t do much on the ball period. Doesn’t get on it much for that matter. 5

Kent:

Rangers’ most dangerous player, got behind the rearguard a few times and should have won a penalty but for a bad call by the sub ref. Bright. 8

Roofe:

Was running all over the place, linking up a tonne but wasn’t able to have an effective impact as an attacker. 7

Itten:

Got zero service and wasn’t able to do a lot. 5

Subs:

Barisic:

Had absolutely no impact – counted one cross. 5

Davis:

Big impact with equalising goal and tried to make things happen. 7

Steven Gerrard:

Made four changes, but this was a side which simply didn’t show up, and despite the early goal, never looked like winning this match. Steven Gerrard and his team choked tonight – a big statement to make, and St Mirren deserved to go through. The implications of this result are colossal. 5

  1. WE MISSED THE BUFF
Itten pure mince a fuckin a bad buy and that Bassey too pure crap
Bullied off the ball all night
    Alot to learn
    Gerrard underestimated the saints

  2. Absolutely stunned and shocked. That was awful no balls, guts , stones however you want to state it . Why mess with a winning formula ….it cost us last season …OMG the whole fall out from this will be massive the rotten mob and thier following will love this …It points to bottle crashing etc etc . Yes the disallowed goal was 50/50 yes we should have had a pen …but to lose a goal 4 minutes after equalising in such a dramatic way is disgraceful…..

  3. This was a bad bad night. While I think some of marks and comments might be a bit of a kneejerk there’s a part of me that wonders if you might actually be correct. Based on what we’ve seen we know, or think we know, that Balogun, Bassey, Aribo, Arfield, Roofe and Itten can do better there is now a big question mark against them. This was a trophy that we just had to step up to collect and they bottled it. Again!!! As for 55 let’s hear no more about it unless we win our next 6 games. I fear we got found out tonight and we have definitely lost our mask of invincibility. Other teams will now smell blood.
