Why former Rangers star proves present one’s incredible value…

On the top of James Tavernier and his transfer speculation, there has been a touch of ridicule and disagreement from the usual handwringers in our support that we can get £20M for him, that he would not be worth that.

The usual types play him down and smear yet another Rangers asset as worth buttons, asserting that he’s not good enough etc.

But a commenter on the site made a pretty sharp observation which really pours cold water over the notion he couldn’t be worth that kind of money;

In 2008 Rangers had a player, you may remember him, called Alan Hutton. Awesome going forward, with slightly questionable defensive qualities, the-then 23-year old delivered in Europe as well as in the SPL, and he was sold to Tottenham for £9M.

Just over 10 years later, we have another right back, this time our captain, with an absolutely astonishing assists and goals record – and taking into account the ludicrous state of inflation that sees Scott McKenna worth nearly £10M, and Moussa Dembele double that… and according to some types in our support, Tavernier just can’t be worth double what Hutton was 10 years ago?

Does anyone see the flaw in the argument here? That all the rules which legitimately apply to other clubs, according to some in our own fanbase don’t apply to us and Tavernier is only worth about £6M at tops?

That other clubs can make fortunes from their assets but many fans in our support diss our prized players and suggest it’s cuckoo land to get any more than a modest fee?

If club asset RB Alan Hutton could fetch us around £10M in 2008, why can club asset RB and captain Tavernier not fetch double that in these crazy transfer times today?

Answer us that.

  1. Alan hutton was not english that pretty much doubles a players worth in the english market. But forget the hutton to tav comparrison that i made a few months ago how about we compare him to the reported value of players more recently in out team. Does anybody think he is woprth less than Worral well apparently forest turned down 11 million for him. He got more assists from right back than the scottish young player of the year award winner got from the left wing and he is valued at no less than 12 million. What about the scums 28 million valuation of teirney in any world teirney is worth 28 million tav is worth way more than half that figure add on the fact he is english and 20 million doesn't seem so bizzare any longer.

  2. Realistically, we won't get £20million for Tavernier.

    We will get £15million max

    But if a Reasonable enough Offer was to come in, It's Time to Sell

  3. Not saying he isn't worth that. Do I think we'll get that? No. Because low-ballers, are everywhere.

  4. Imagine his worth if he went onto perform in the champions league. 20 million would be the bottom line.

  5. Alan Hutton was playing in the Champions League and we were winning the Scottish league and cups back then. That kind of exposure generates the millions, Kent is an example of that as he belongs to a Champions League winning side.
    Tav has been responsible for a lot of goals against us (remember that pass back at parkhead last season?!). We are not in the champions league and the Scottish game is gutter level therefore very difficult to value our players at that kind of level. I think Tav will remain a Rangers player as no other club will pay above 10 million for him and we won't accept anything less, therefore another year of his piss poor defending beckons. Never a Rangers captain!
