How Rangers lost £2.5M

How Rangers lost £2.5M

Departing Bruno Alves’ wages have been a subject of some debate, with the summer 2017 marquee signing ditching the sunny climes of Serie A for the dismal rain of Govan.

It took some persuading to make the European champion willing to sacrifice a plum gig in Italy for the ill-fated Hispanic revolution (read- ‘shambles’) at Ibrox and that certainly wasn’t possible by simply having a Portuguese manager (who no one even knew) in charge.

No, the real clincher for Alves was money, and a wage reported to be around £25,000.

Don’t get us wrong, you don’t get top players for less these days, unless they have personal investment in Rangers or have suffered a loss of stock in the game, so we are not going to slur the ex-Zenit man for being paid what he probably reckoned he was worth, but if we tot it all up, Rangers wasted at least £1.3M in wages on Alves over the course of 12 months.

We shudder to imagine what we wasted and may continue to lose on Carlos Pena.

But there is no denying deep mistakes were made last summer, and this club is having  to financially recover from them.

Effectively £11M wasted in transfer fees (Morelos and Candeias aside) plus the added wages and it adds up to many millions.

Alves has been training with the Tardini crew in Italy (albeit that move is now in jeopardy), in advance of the transfer being verified, but we cannot help but wonder if the £1M for his services, and near £1.5M (£2.5M effectively down the drain) for his salary could not have been better used spent elsewhere.

Regardless of the board’s errors last summer (and Stewart Robertson was a monumental culprit here) the funds have had to be dished out again to support Steven Gerrard, and we carry a little sympathy for the suits who saw possibly around £20M completely wasted in that window and over the course of the year, but have to keep it coming to finance and support Stevie Ger.

And Bruno Alves, decent guy though he is, was a symbol of that wasteful spending.

Let’s hope this window has been wiser.

  1. lets face it, the decisions stewart robertson and co have made over the past 18 months would have got him the sack in any other business, i don’t trust him or the board to deliver what they promise but if they don't i think stevie will not be long in sussing them out

  2. Nothing ventured nothing gained. You have to take chances and Alves hardly seemed like a high risk when the team took him on. He had a proven record of consistent, excellence.
This team has had a horrid run of poor luck of late. However, these things do not last. Brighter days ahead, I am sure of it.

  3. Alves, it appears has been living on past glories and not on outright present day ability.

He may do better with quality all around him but at Ibrox we need players to shine regardless.

Good luck to Bruno if he can prolong his career and earn money elsewhere. Goodbye, good riddance.

  4. Not much point doing the "if only" routine now – so bad was the recruitment last summer, I just try to blank it out. I'd have taken another year with Big Clint rather than Alves and would have had a better defence and a damn site more cash in the bank – the bloke was an imposter, irrespective of his history.

  5. Unbelievable
This has got to be the worst panick buying we've ever seen at Rangers
20 mil down the swanny ffs and for what fuckall zilch nada, the most embarrassing season of all time

Thank fuck we got Stevie boy now 🇬🇧

    LETS GO WATP 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧

  6. Where do you get your figures 1m for Alves try couple hundred k ' 11m spent try between 7&8 plus we took in between 2&3 on sales so more like a 5m net. Although I do agree it was terribly spent

  7. Hindsight is a great thing ,at the time everyone had just seen him star for Portugal, outstanding he was no one has a crystal ball, however someone should have guessed the style of football here would not suit him

  8. Trouble is we have just taken another extreme chance with SG while oor chairman is now stuck in SA which in fairness is probably a good thing, but hopefully happier days ahead, why do I keep saying that, if Mr K goes then I think all will be well J

  9. I don’t see how u can complain about signing him. His record is one we should be aiming for… 90 caps for one of the best national teams recently. Had won a lot and don’t forget was still collecting caps after joining us… the problem seems to be more the fact that he obviously had realised he had made a mistake coming here and didn’t want to be here, but we can’t complain about the club going after these types of players. We need a big strong experienced captain on the park… sadly he wasn’t it

  10. Feel Kinda sorry For Alves,

Ok He didnt do the Business like we Expected but he didnt exactly have Great Players around him did He?

He shud go back to sunnier climates and take Herrera & Cardoso with him 👏
