It will never happen in a million years, but with Rangers’ striker issues well-documented, a former world class superstar is available for free, only 34 years of age and with a CV the envy of many.

Having plied his trade for some of the biggest clubs on earth including AC Milan, Chelsea and Villarreal, Alexandre Pato is one of the most intriguing free agents out there, and with his track record of footballing brilliance, he really would be a staggering signing for Rangers to get.

11 in 24 for Villarreal, 1 in 2 for Chelsea (ok ok), and 81 in 150 for AC Milan shows the class the lad has had in his career. Even in the MLS 18 months ago it was 9 in 27 which is half decent.

He switched to China for a while in 2017 and clips of his destroying opponents went viral, as he nailed 44 in 60. The boy can, and could, play.

But of course, this ex-£35M superstar has a catch – he’s had an injury problem or two in recent times, and that is up till late last year – which we can clearly tell will have the sirens in Rangers fans’ heads highly alarmed.

But the reality is if this boy can get fit, is fit, he’s a world class striker who would destroy the SPL.

In his Milan days he was a skinny waif, and had to bulk up – it took some adjustment but he became a physical unit, even if he still only looks about 15 years old.

And scoring comes naturally to him.

Physically, he’s a dichotomy – his body can handle the rigours of the SPL, but his injury history could suggest some issues of recent years, and that’s a massive chance to take.

Keep him fit though, and you’d have one of the best strikers the SPL has ever seen.

Wages?

Not a problem – he’s made his money in the game and just wants to play again – he was freed by Sao Paolo and is looking for a good gig to go to next.

Rangers?

Probably not, but the headlines would be something else.
