Rangers’ Welsh stars Tom Lawrence and Rabbi Matondo experienced mixed fortunes with Robert Page’s squad announcement for the upcoming international break, as Matondo, just back from injury, got the call for his nation, while Lawrence, surprisingly, was excluded.
Matondo, not even ready yet to start a full 90 minutes, or to play one, was picked and Lawrence, who’s been steadily consistent the past few weeks and scored a massive goal v Benfica not to mention a huge one as well v Killie was overlooked.
We must admit surprise at that decision.
Obviously we’re pleased for Rabbi – Ibrox Noise believe he was coming onto a significant game at long last prior to injury, and he is now one of the few wingers we actually have.
But on the other hand he’s not mega fit yet and can’t offer Wales much of a starting option as far as we’re aware.
Meanwhile Tom Lawrence, who’s been available for quite a while now and has been scoring huge goals for his club misses out on the call up.
It’s a notably puzzling one.
If either of them was to be called we’re surprised it wasn’t the ex-Derby man, but more feasibly, why weren’t both of them included.
An odd one from Rob Page who may think Lawrence hasn’t truly proven his fitness yet – or was it agreement with Rangers to omit him to keep him fresh given Rangers’ currently limited options there? But then Matondo’s position is even more limited!
We can’t possibly know the reason Page omitted Lawrence but it is a bit strange to leave him out and take Matondo instead.
But them’s there is the decision.
Didn’t they have some sort of fall out years back when Page was the under 21s manager? Wayne Rooney called it out for the last Euro squad when he was Derby captain saying he had to get over their history and select him in the squad, Page denied any history and never selected him anyway!
Page has still called Lawrence up for the senior team since many times Spark. Some say it’s to do with the horrible hit and run incident, but that was way back in 2019.
