A lot of Rangers fans have reacted to striker Kemar Roofe’s latest comments with a massive eyebrow raised, and a touch of scepticism.

As you may know, Roofe is bigging himself up for a new contract, praising the club and the fans, and has exalted his physical condition as being the best it’s been in some time, suggesting his injury issues might be over.

The reaction?

‘He’s just saying this for a new contract’, or ‘why did he delay his hip operation for so long and sponge off the club’s medical?’.

Furthermore, Roofe swung for a shot v St Johnstone at Ibrox and came off inside 5 minutes, after 15 minutes of the match starting. AKA what’s that kick got to do with a hip operation?

There is a real cynicism about the Jamaican – fans are rightly questioning his attitude, his desire, and there’s more than a spot of dubiety about these claims, which come on the eve of his deal expiring.

We completely agree with them. Roofe has been a waster since he joined Rangers – for all that we praise his goal and assists return, the 98 appearances in almost four years is abysmal, and he’d get injured signing a new deal.

The solution? Pay as you play.

It’s simple as that – offer him nothing more than a contract which only pays when he’s fit and available for selection. We can suspect his injury issues would dramatically reduce.

That’s if we even want to keep a guy who has sponged off the club for approaching 4 years, a guy whose attitude towards fitness and the club has been well below acceptable.

But frustratingly who has talent and could still be an exceptional striker for Rangers.

But he’d have to earn it.

Give him no more than pay when fit/playing. He’s a rich enough boy, he’s earned a few quid in football – make him work for his money.

Let’s see how injured he is after that.
