In a ludicrous shocker that really, ultimately shouldn’t surprise anyone in reality, England safe player Gareth Southgate has overlooked Jack Butland and stuck with Aaron Ramsdale who hasn’t played two matches in a row for about 6 years.

In a comical decision which vindicates Danny Murphy’s call that Southgate would go with Ramsdale over Butland, Sky Sources were proven completely wrong on this one, and so were many sources otherwise too, with Rangers’ goalie ignored in order to stick with what he ‘knows’ and it likely spells the end for any chance of Butland going to Germany.

This is a blow for Rangers’ star stopper, that no matter how well he plays he’s not in Southgate’s plans, despite Martyn Margetson, England’s goalkeeping coach, confirming Butland was in prime position to get the gig, only for Southgate to, once again, overlook someone because he’s in Scotland.

This definitively confirms that as soon as an English player moves to Scotland, he is officially out of contention of playing for the national team.

Southgate has no time whatsoever for the SPFL, and we don’t completely blame him – it is a dreadful league a chasm behind the Premier League – there are no Championship players in there either.

The full list:

Goalkeepers: Sam Johnstone, Jordan Pickford, Aaron Ramsdale

Defenders: Jarrad Branthwaite, Ben Chilwell, Lewis Dunk, Joe Gomez, Ezri Konsa, Harry Maguire, John Stones, Kyle Walker

Midfielders: Jude Bellingham, Conor Gallagher, Jordan Henderson, James Maddison, Declan Rice

Forwards: Jarrod Bowen, Phil Foden, Anthony Gordon, Harry Kane, Cole Palmer, Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka, Ivan Toney, Ollie Watkins

Butland might have got the positive words in the press and from Margetson, but in reality he was never in the picture.

Not as long as he plays for Rangers in the SPFL.

He could play beyond his skin, but as long as he’s north of the border he’s not in real contention. Southgate would pick someone with no match fitness over someone in the SPFL.

Still, it’s one less distraction.
