If one player has absolutely failed abysmally at Rangers, it’s Kieran Dowell. A player Ibrox Noise was 100% against us signing, knowing full well it was a bad addition, a mediocre midtable Championship player with 20 Premier League appearances (4 wins) who was miles below standard and has made just 2 match-day squads under Philippe Clement.

Clearly the midfielder just hasn’t impressed the manager – he watches in training and while he’s not the only one not making the cut he’s clearly standing out for not standing out.

Dowell’s shining moment was a pre-season friendly v Hamburg, and since then he’s done nothing – he was a Mick Beale favourite, which pretty much said it all.

Clement has higher standards and players of this calibre aren’t good enough – and he will leave next month – a four-year deal for this guy and it’ll be on loan unless a buyer can be found.

The good news is he was a free, the bad news is he took the space that an actual quality performer could have had in the squad.

A wasted wage, a waste of time.

This isn’t a hate piece, we’re sure he’s a decent enough guy, but he’s nothing more than Championship fodder, much like a few of the untouchables in our current first team in fairness, and that’s not good enough to win league titles.

It’s not good enough for Rangers in general but it is what we’re dealing with – but we can absolutely do better than Kieran Dowell going forward.
