Regulars to Ibrox Noise will know we’re long-time fans of John Lundstram, and we’re delighted to see the big midfielder slowly become the best on earth again.
In truth there was a return to form for the man under Michael Beale this season – he’d been delivering a few 7/10s under the ex-boss, so this hasn’t come from nowhere, but Rangers fans knew on the run to Sevilla how truly good a midfielder the ex-Sheffield star was.
Let’s not forget he came to Ibrox under freedom of contract and with a market value at the time of £15M give or take – not quite England international level (albeit many caps at youth level) but clearly Premier League level with 62 appearances.
He was a top top player who was initially very badly-managed by Steven Gerrard who insisted on pairing him with Steven Davis, which didn’t work at all. It was chalk and cheese and Lunny was made to look poor.
It wasn’t till Davo was laid out with injury that Lunny started to thrive, and when Giovanni took over, and finally gave the scouser a proper go on his own in February 2022, he never looked back.
He became the best on earth and that stuck till that summer till he appeared to be hampered by an injury (he denied this). His form disappeared during that horrible UCL spell and the overall messy season last campaign, he became sluggish, and fans fell out of love with him.
But this season has seen much more like what he really is – a massive tubthumping force of nature in the middle and the arrival of Philippe Clement has truly gotten from him the increasing best from him.
Lunny is back to a mainstay in the middle, and his game is restoring to its classic level.
Fans are now back in love with him, and he’s reclaimed his throne.
It’s nice to see him being rated again, being praised – whether by bad management or injury Lunny’s Rangers career has been a little bit rollercoaster, but there’s no denying that when fit and on form John Lundstram is one of the strongest and most dedicated players we have, with a bang-on attitude.
One of the many successes of Clement.
Some of us never fell out of love with him. Always new his form would pick back up hes a fighter and great determination.
