We assessed the transfer window as ‘underwhelming’ in agreement with most Rangers fans, with obviously the ‘give them a chance’ clause also kicking in, but the imminent addition of Cyriel Dessers could make an impact on that opinion.
As things stand, the 5 added just aren’t that shiny – Jack Butland aside, none of the players added really come close to taking Rangers up an obvious level, and even Butland’s recent career is poor and he does have a lot to prove.
Does Dessers’ signing change it?
No, not really.
Rangers remain short at the back, and weak on the wings, and vulnerable at RB.
Dessers’ signing would give us some more oomph up front, but it’s far too early to tell how good a hitman he will be for us, even if his career up till now is solid.
But it’s not a game-changer. That would, however, come if LAFC’s Jose Cifuentes and Feyenoord’s Danilo also join the Nigeria man at Ibrox.
On his own, Dessers isn’t really that exciting an addition – he’s decent and definitely a capable front man, but it’s the addition of the Brazil and Ecuador men who would turn the window from average to good.
Rangers need A-game players, we need top performers, we don’t need Championship rejects and squad fodder (in general) and nabbing all three of these guys would be a big deal and make things look much, much better.
Yes, it won’t stop the weak spot that is James Tavernier, but it will make the rest of the XI pretty solid.
Ibrox Noise’s Ross posited a potential current XI, but the weak spots are there for all to see – particularly Davies at the back – and we’re all far from convinced Sima is going to shine.
But add these three new guys to the squad and it’s a lot better. Still not quite there, but a Rangers XI with Raskin, Cifuentes, Cantwell, Lammers, Dessers and Danilo would definitely be interesting.
Game-changers? We need them to be.
