With only four games now remaining this season, there will be a few players that we don’t see again pulling on the famous blue shirt.
There are some that divide opinion like Fred & Kent, while there are others that we need to move on but at the same time thank them for their service to the club over a long period of time.
There are two stalwarts that are more or less set to end their playing career with Rangers, and while performances this season have declined, on the whole they have been exceptional for the Gers over two periods – These are Allan McGregor & Steven Davis.
Firstly McGregor, he’s been one of the finest keepers ever to pull on the Rangers jersey – he is right up there with Andy ‘the goalie’ Goram when it comes to our Greatest X1.
While there have been some great saves this season, I am afraid that there has been too many lapses in his standards this season – think this was a season too far for McGregor.
He should have left with his head held high after last season, but was that due to Gio wanting him to stay on or was it all down to McGregor himself?
I am still amazed at his save against the racists of Prague, when he managed to stop the ball going in & still then was able to fully claim the ball – just a wonderful save.
There is still talk of him staying on next season, but I can only see that happening if he was third choice and passing on his experience to the other goalkeepers we have on our books & only being used in case of an emergency.
And then there is Steven Davis, on his day he could unlock any defence with the standard of his passing & bring a calmness to the team when cool heads were needed
The injury that he sustained is one that will probably end his stay at Ibrox, which is a shame in terms of how he departs the club.
There is no doubt that Davis would want to come back from this injury and return to playing for both Rangers & his beloved Northern Ireland, but while the footballing brain has never left him you just wonder if he can continue.
There can’t be room for any sentimental feeling to come into play, as it’s not value for money in handing out a new deal for Davis at the moment.
HOWEVER, I wonder if there is a role for both McGregor & Davis to continue at the club.
Yes both might want to keep on playing, however it is evident that they are not going to be first or even second choices at the club.
So do both get offered new deals but more emphasis on coaching?
They both have so much knowledge & experience that our young players can soak up and learn from – our loss could be another club’s gain.
Both can still be registered as a player but would mainly play for the B Team when required, and as for McGregor he is also useful when it comes to meeting those UEFA Registration rules.
But both might decide just to hang the boots up and head off into the sun set with our thanks & best wishes.
