Scouting could see a ‘completely new’ Rangers striker arriving

If there’s one thing that is new territory for Rangers at the moment, it’s signing a striker we don’t know. That is, that the last two main alpha strikers we brought in, Morelos and Colak, were both known, or ‘given’ to us.

In Morelos’ case ex-youth coach Jonatan Johansson knew of him in his home league, the Veikkausliiga, and that gave Rangers a head start to securing a free-scoring hitman, albeit in a low standard of league as Finland is. He cost just £800,000.

In Colak’s case? Well, we all know what he did to us for Malmo, and that kept him on the radar ever since.

But now, all the links Rangers are moving for are not former opponents, aside potentially any Premiership-based ones, but are all new.

Rangers would struggle to get close to signing any of Napoli, Liverpool or Ajax’s first-team players, so clearly that’s not happening, and naturally that’s the only Europe we played last season.

Scottish Premiership possibly – van Veen and Shankland are among those we’re monitoring, but when it comes to premiere alpha big strikers, it’s kind of new territory – even Jermain Defoe was well-known already, both to Rangers and especially to his former England teammate and our manager at the time, Mr Steven Gerrard.

Now? All the players we’re in for are actually requiring proper full scouting, players our scouts are spotting, being impressed by, and bringing them to Michael Beale’s attention.

And of course, Beale himself is doing a tonne of this scouting, looking at strikers around Europe and elsewhere and seeing who fits what he wants. This, of course, applies to many of the positions we’ll seek this summer, but it is a change that instead of Rangers bringing in a new striker who is familiar to the club or to staff already, now we’re bringing in, seemingly, a fresh face.

It’s now a case of finding a player, a striker, who fits Michael Beale’s style. Whether that’s this Tasios Douvakis or anyone else, it will be interesting to get a completely fresh face in based on simple scouting to see who stands out.

We have JJ to thank for Alfie, and we have Colak himself and a Champions draw to ‘thank’ for him.

But it’s all new faces now possibly.
