Rangers could make a shock move for Ecuador star José Adoni Cifuentes Charcopa whose contract expires this summer in USA’s MLS.

The LAFC midfielder, 24, has a solid 15 caps with his country including the world cup, but it’s his market value that is of interest, with around £15M on his head.

The 24-year-old would be seen as a replacement for Ryan Jack and Glen Kamara primarily, with the Scotland midfielder’s contract expiring and no sign of a new deal, while the Fin wants his move out. Meanwhile John Lundstram has fallen a bit down the pecking order through the loss of a yard and potential injury and Steven Davis is close to retirement.

With Todd Cantwell and Nicolas Raskin seen as by far the top two for that area, it is felt one more of higher quality than those currently there is a good option, and £15M-rated Cifuentes could be an answer.

He’s another one who has never played in Europe, going from Ecuador to the MLS for £3M in 2020, but his performances in the USA have alerted Rangers scouts who are going for this type of target:

Young, approaching prime, out of contract, and with a strong market value.

In short, ‘another 9 of them please boss’, as we alluded to yesterday without a single word of disagreement.

Is he good enough? In truth he’s an experienced international with world cup to his CV so there’s no question the boy can play a bit, but he’s untested club-wise at a high level, unlike both Cantwell and Raskin.

This is the kind of player that if he works out, the scouting is a genius, but when he doesn’t, ala Juan Alegria, why on earth did we sign him.

But it’s a Bosman, and those are Rangers’ favourites for price. Can we get another 9 Raskins and Cantwells? Well, that is down to Mr Rangers really, we’ll see, and we know the mixed results our signing department has had in recent years.

But an Ecuador international at £15M market value is definitely not a League One fringe player that Plymouth aren’t interested in any more…
