Some Rangers fans explain why they want McLaughlin in goal

We put out a post on our Facebook with the following question:

‘For those Rangers fans who still want Jon McLaughlin in goal, can you explain why?’

We were not shocked to see a tonne of abuse at this question, ranging from ‘he was only to blame for one of the goals’ to the more evasive ‘there were another 10 players out there’ and last but not least ‘I’m sure McGregor made these errors last season’.

Only a minority actually acknowledged how poor to average a goalkeeper McLaughlin actually is, and hope a change will be made.

See, we are not, and never were, blaming him for yesterday alone.

But the key point is a big-time goalie, a proper Rangers goalie, would have made a number of big saves, and either scraped us a heroic point (as McGregor used to do) or kept the score way down.

The one exception was February when McGregor shipped three at Parkhead, but not a single fan attributed blame on him because he had absolutely no chance with the porous defence.

Yesterday? He’d have stopped at least 3 of those. Yes, we’d still likely have lost, but a better goalkeeper, a Rangers standard goalie would not have been a massive cause of our humbling, but instead would have stopped it being one.

We have never hated Jon McLaughlin; in his shoes we’d be laughing too, a complete journeyman goalie who’s not even at the level of Wes Foderingham (McLaughlin has 43 career appearances in the Championship and that’s it, Foderingham, 3 years his junior, already has 39) cannot believe his luck to be number one goalkeeper for a club the size of Rangers in the Champions ****ing League for goodness’ sake.

The issue is not about reinstating McGregor immediately, it never was – it’s about finding a new talent for the sticks – be that promoting McCrorie or signing a new one.

If Rangers fans think a goalie whose career best is 43 Championship appearances and has had the majority of his career in England’s League One to be good enough for number one at our club, we despair.

Gio inexplicably promoted him – we cannot understand why. The decision is on our manager.

And while McLaughlin was certainly not the only factor in our dismal loss yesterday, he’s one that can be changed.

And must be.
