Ignore the £40M, but Rangers may have a gem in Malik Tillman

As we all know, Malik Tillman has hit the ground running in his loan at Ibrox, with the 20-year old USA international scoring twice in two matches.

The attacking midfielder/winger has fit in seamlessly, and demonstrated the quality of the Bayern Munich Academy, something Ross Wilson was well aware of and secured the option to buy in the loan deal as well.

See, Tillman couldn’t quite establish himself at the Allianz, but he still got 7 appearances for the Bundesliga giants including two outings in the Champions League.

This is a player of very high pedigree, and Rangers supporters are seeing very quickly just how impressive he is.

Hence there have been calls this early on to make Tillman permanent, and while nonsense figures of £40M have been used to get clicks, Tillman’s market value, around £2M, makes him a shrewd acquisition if the club chooses to keep him.

And at this early stage it’s possible.

But as we just said, it is early. Long may Tillman’s form continue, but just like with Antonio Colak’s start, it’s hard to properly judge anyone this quick into the season.

Look at how fans slaughtered John Souttar despite it only being our first league match v Livi.

Ditto Matondo, been a bit up and down.

As John Lundstram rightly said, you can’t judge after a few games, you can barely even judge after a season.

That said, Tillman will return to Germany next summer if Rangers don’t take up the option, and while it’s early days, at this point we’d clearly prefer the club did make it permanent.

But let’s give it a bit of time first.
