This morning’s stories are filled with claims Rangers are set to give Niko Katic a second chance, with absolutely no basis behind that whatsoever.

Rangers, as we know, like most clubs, aren’t terribly interested in their loan players once they go out, because if you go on loan you’re generally deemed not good enough for your parent club.

Very rarely does it mean much else.

And while Ced the Ted was recalled, that was due to thinning options up front, with the knowledge Defoe was gone and Morelos was going to be going on Colombia duty.

So the story over Katic seems like lazy journalism, because Gio had no interest in bringing him back in January when we had something of a defensive crisis.

There remains a £3M option to buy for Split, but with the Croat injured at the moment, his chances of being bought might be a bit lower than they were.

But it’s definitely not off the table.

Rangers effectively have 6 CBs now – Katic, Goldson, Souttar, Helander, Balogun and Bassey, and we cannot see Katic being recalled to make Gio’s life more complicated.

John Souttar will almost certainly be first choice CB next term, but his partner is something of a mystery – Goldson is now out of contract, as is Balogun.

Katic?

We just can’t see that lifeline happening at all.

In Gio We Trust.

  1. Katic deserves a chance again. He was our best CB we had before he was injured, Gerrard just treated him like an idiot the way he was in and out the team.
