There’s no question Giovanni van Bronckhorst made 3 mistakes recently, and Ibrox Noise, big fans of the manager though we are, are going to highlight and call those mistakes out, one by one.
You do not improve and learn if you don’t recognise your errors.
1: Recalling Cedric Itten.
Yes this was a blunder, a calculated risk which far from paid off. Alfredo Morelos was going to be away on Colombia duty, and Jermain Defoe was leaving. Rangers had just Fashion Sakala and Kemar Roofe up top. And the decision was made to recall the Swiss. It absolutely didn’t work out and Itten is a tenth of the reasonable striker he was when he left. Pity really, but these things happen.
2: Not recalling Niko Katic.
So we understand an internal bust-up with another squad member (who will remain nameless) is a major reason why he was exiled, but nevertheless Rangers have had defensive issues this year and having Katic (who has done very well in Croatia) back on the roster would have enhanced the options a lot and covered any injuries well. The fans love him and he’d be a popular recall.
3: Axing Filip Helander from UEL.
Yes, we know he was injured at the time of the squad announcement but so was Ryan Jack – can’t help feeling having Helander would have helped with depth. Bassey has done admirably but he’s not a natural CB, where Fil is. Helander is a top class defender who will be close to match fitness by the time Braga shows up. Would have been nice to have had him.
The UEL implications are clearly not that grave – we’ve made it to the quarters without Katic, Helander and with Itten (!)
But who knows what difference these decisions would have made domestically especially had they been reversed.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing,fair enough itten was a mistake the other 2 not so much
Helander was at fault for Dundee goal he’s good but easily caught out and slow I prefer balogun
I really hope Katic comes back, he was my fav Rangers player before he was injured. Anyone know who the bust up was with, im guessing Goldson ? He gets the blame for everything else so i’ll guess him lol.
