There is no question Rangers have a tough match awaiting the arrival of Serbian giants Red Star this week.

With just one league loss all season (and three draws) Crvena Zvezda are not to be taken lightly, and their record in the UEL is worthy of respect too.

Through as group winners with just one loss along the way, the Eastern Bloc side are second domestically only to country rivals Partizan, and their last 5 league results are all clean wins.

In Europe, obviously they didn’t have a playoff round but their group results were impressive. 3 wins, 2 draws and a loss (to Michelin).

So this might be getting regarded as the underdog but we at Ibrox Noise are absolutely 100% respectful of them, in the way we weren’t of Praha, who frankly gave us a football lesson in both legs.

So zero chance of this happening, and we’re certainly wary of a Slavic side, criminally underrated and spoiling for a battle.

Rangers have been a different beast this season in Europe compared with recent domestic fare, so while we far from assume a win, we certainly expect a good battle, and for our players to show up in a way they don’t seem to league-wise.

When the European Rangers appears, any side in Europe is vulnerable.

But we have to be on our guard.

Their main danger? Aleksandar Katai. The Serbian international might only have 10 caps at 31 but he makes Red Star tick – he already has 20 goals and 4 assists in 32 outings this season, and he will be a real menace on the wing for Tavernier to deal with.

Otherwise they’re a typically technical eastern side and we’ll need to be wary of the threat they carry.

Game on!

  1. Spot on. The first problem will be which Rangers will turn up. Will it be the team that destroyed Dortmund or the team that meekly folded against Malmo. The second problem will be Red Star themselves. Teams from that neck of the woods are never mugs and often much much better. We have to turn up in both legs.
