Rangers’ Croat LB Borna Barisic appears to have played his last match for Rangers amidst reports the ex-Osijek star is set to move to Italy and potentially Roma for an alleged transfer fee of around £12M.
The 28-year old, seen emotionally bidding ‘goodbye’ to the Ibrox faithful at full time yesterday, has been tracked by the Giallorossi for some considerable time, but their Italian rivals Inter are also said to be in the hunt for a top class LB and may consider a bid before the window ends.
Gary McAllister, often very cryptic at the best of times, failed post-match to dispel the stories that Barisic was leaving, and the last time he confirmed or denied a direct transfer link to the press was Bongani Zungu and of course the big South African did arrive.
So there’s clearly something in this, and those early stories have the Croatia international moving on for a strong fee solidly in excess of £10M.
This hasn’t gone down badly with fans, who console themselves with the stunning emergence this season of Calvin Bassey, his displays being remarkably impressive, and the ex-Leicester kid was actually signed as a successor to Barisic in the first place. That looks like it will come to pass now.
But the one downside is just barely 48 hours remain of the transfer window and that’s not a lot of time to replace Barisic.
We’ll see how it unfolds.
