Rangers’ first night in the CL for 10 years yielded interesting results, and Ibrox Noise takes you through our scores for the players who took the field:

McGregor:

Had very little to do and had no chance with either goal. Strange night really for McGregor. 6

Tavernier:

Completely out of position for goal one, and gave the ball away badly for goal two, Tavernier was massively culpable for both goals but had a productive night attack wise. A very mixed bag for the captain. 5

Goldson:

Some strong clearances in the first half with some good positioning, but as exposed as his captain for both goals. Goldson didn’t cover himself too well overall in this match. 5

Helander:

Really had a difficult night – didn’t look terribly fit and was cumbersome. He looked a bit slow and committed a few too many fouls. 5

Barisic:

Another one returning from a pretty poor Euros on a personal level, Barisic did try to get forward but wasn’t able to deliver much in the way of crossing. Malmo seemed to do a number on him. 5

Davis:

Wasn’t as heavily in the game as he would expect to be, and his big moment was the last kick. For that lifeline alone we award him 7.

Lundstram:

Quiet to start with but was noticeably tidier as the game wore on and was one of Rangers’ slightly better performers. Some good defensive work and comfortable on the ball. 7

Arfield:

Miles off match sharpness, but Aribo’s ongoing on and off absence meant he was needed. He tried but couldn’t get into this one. 5

Kent:

Lively, if lacking composure when it mattered, Kent was showing a clean pair of heels to plenty but little really came off for him in the end. 6

Wright:

Bright, energetic and full of running, Wright never stops giving it everything. One of the hardest-working players we’ve ever seen at Ibrox. Really has guts but can play too. 7

Itten:

A strong performance from Cedric who shone well, even if he isn’t the quickest. Some intelligent hold up play, good use of the ball, and while it wasn’t a masterclass in striking, it’s the best he’s played. 7

Subs:

Sakala:

Barely noticeable, again. Had one good chance but couldn’t convert. It is of course early days and we can only judge on what we’ve seen but so far he’s not exactly settled yet. Give him time and all that. 4

Manager:

Steven Gerrard picked about as strong a team as he had, but will be disappointed with the lack of cohesion among the players. There was a lot of sloppy play, and it was just a bit too loose for swathes of this match, plus that defensive lapsing will have him very concerned. Rangers did miss Morelos, but they missed a lot more than just one player. Had nothing really on the bench to call upon. Hopefully the manager will right this for next week. Post match comments were weird. 5

  1. You rightly pointed out that guys like Barisic, Arfield and Helander looked well off the place having played very little football in the past 3 months. So why didn’t we play that team on Saturday to let them blow off the cobwebs and get some minutes in the legs.
I also have to question why Morelos wasn’t there. Surely his return date from the Copa America should have been built around the date of this match. He should’ve been back at Ibrox within a few days of finishing his Columbia business. Of course he’s entitled to some time off but surely we could’ve given him a few weeks off once group qualification was confirmed.
