Gerrard monitoring 28-year old German international assist king – reports

Rangers have again in the past 24 hours been linked with a summer move for Hamburg’s German international attacking midfielder Lewis Holtby.

The 28-year old former Spurs star is out of contract this summer and Steven Gerrard, desperately seeking a quality solution for the long-standing 10 problem at Ibrox, could well be interested in a prize Bosman in June when the £3M man becomes available.

The links with Holtby have been around since the days of Mark Warburton, with the 5”9’ playmaker the kind of quick and skilful attacker Rangers desperately lack in the middle.

Regarded as a ‘catalyst’ who can turn games around, Holtby could be a very wise solution to such an issue, with Rangers deeply lacking real quality behind Alfredo Morelos in that position.

With 11 combined assists and goals this season, and 6 last, Holtby is clearly still capable at the highest levels, albeit this season of course Hamburg are in Germany’s second top flight.

He’s spent most of his career in his homeland, with a couple of spells in England, plus, as mentioned, he has a handful of caps for his country as well. Even one cap for a side as strong as Germany is impressive.

We’ll see over the next few months if this becomes serious.

  1. I like what I hear about him, excepting his stats are not that great. If we had him and Lewis MacLeod at Ibrox, we could finally have some depth for that position.
Mind you, scouts may have unearthed some others, so we will have to wait and see.

  2. But then Barisic is a left back, not a No 10. I bet his goals and assists statsare better than McGregors too 🙂

    • We could throw a right can of worms in and argue the case of Scotland's top assist provider…

  3. 6 goals/assists in the top flight last season aren't great stats for a "number 10". 11 in the second tier is slightly more encouraging but still not great. However we have done well with Germans in the past so worth a look.
