Have Rangers’ board made a big mistake?

We at Ibrox Noise (and in truth, a huge portion of the fanbase) were against the appointment of Graeme Murty.

We never shied away from it, albeit neither did we want Derek McInnes. But after the pursuit of the Aberdeen boss finally came to an end, the board shambolically gave the youth coach the job permanently.

It was a decision we were utterly opposed to, not in dislike of the man nor anything against him, but purely because we felt we needed an experienced man at the helm.

We needed someone with managerial clout, someone the players would respect and play for, and we didn’t think Murty stacked up to that.

However, when Rangers started to build a run under his permanent appointment, we bought into the idea we might have been wrong.

Only seven days ago we were looking forward to tomorrow’s Old Firm clash with real hope, even if we recognised our lack of experience in winning those clashes was an issue. It turned out to be the case, and we expressed some worries about yesterday’s visit of Killie. Which turned out well founded too.

Fast forward to now – the landscape has changed dramatically over the course of a week, and Rangers’ manager has been undone rather easily by two managers in a row, and on our own patch.

If we overlooked the terrible comments the man has made in the press since being caretaker (his comments post-match yesterday were also pure desperation) we were happy to praise he and Jimmy Nicholl’s fine spell in charge overall – and suggest we got it wrong.

But the wimpering, simpering and frankly feeble successive home losses in a week have brought absolutely everyone crashing back to earth.

The board didn’t really take a gamble on Murty, they took the easy option. And for a couple of months, it looked like they had fluked on a gem.

It felt good, really good, to believe we were on the right path, and things had indeed been rather good of late, but Murty’s chronic inexperience at this level is starting to be exposed and while there is nothing wrong with putting a first time manager in charge, it is always a risk. In Celtic’s case it’s one which paid off with Neil Lennon, in Rangers’ case Ally McCoist and now Graeme Murty cannot be classed as successes.

This is not to request Murty be ditched. We actually haven’t a clue what to do now.

The defence remains horrendous, Murty’s management debatable, and teams now know, thanks to Celtic and Kilmarnock, how to stop us.

What happens next? Your guess is as good as ours, folks.

  1. Under Caixinha we were going nowhere and the teams performances were a joke. Rangers were a laughing stock. Enter Murty. We all knew he didn't have the experience but he bought back dignity to our club and some really good performances. No disrespect to G M but he has now been found out that it is too early for him to manage a club the size of Rangers. Surely, because of his efforts and the boards willingness to back him Rangers have become a more appealing club to manage. The board should be looking to replace G M at the end of the season with someone with a great deal of experience. Who though?

    • How negative can we get. For a start both Warburton and Pedro were fully accredited managers who had managerial experience with other clubs. They were both abject failures. Murty has given us some of the best football we have seen at Ibrox for years this team is a work in progress so let's give the man some time and space. It's the players who should be ashamed of the last game against Kilmarnock.

  2. A despairing but very accurate article. We now know that Murty is incapable or not ready for the job at Ibrox. We also know that the vast majority of players are nowhere near good enough to be wearing Rangers blue. But for me the most significant development to add to this is the arrival on the scene of Close Brothers. The soft loans have dried up – no more money there – and we now have loans and interest repayments that must be met. This means that the summer transfer budget will be either zero or slightly more that and the cost of a new manager needs to be factored in! We are staring into the abyss!

  3. It is difficult to know where to begin when it comes to this Rangers Board and their complete failure when it comes to appointing (or not appointing) a manager. Neither King nor anyone else has ever come out and properly explained how the utter abomination that was Caixinha was ever appointed and then allowed to turn the club into a figure of ridicule. Neither have they explained what really went on with the McInnes shambles. In truth they didn’t really appoint Murty so much as well …someone had to take the team on a Saturday. We can only hope that the Board despite their record has had at least the foresight to realise that Murty was never a long term option and that Mark Allen has been quietly and diligently behind the scenes working on a succession strategy to kick in as soon as the final ball of this season has been kicked into touch. If so then maybe he might have been minded to invite Steve Clarke up the marble staircase for a glass of wine at full time yesterday while Murty tried to explain to fans and media why the players once again reverted to type and bottled it in front of a packed Ibrox.

    • Why all this nonsence about clark as manager. Hes been a good asst but found out apart from killie job & not the man for me. Totally underwhelmed by thought of him as manager

  4. I would like to see the result of the poll if we had it a week ago!I wish we would stop judging people in a game to game basis. One week Murty is brilliant next week he’s rubbish,One week Windass is class next week he should be sold!As I said before the Celtic game we have to walk before we can run. We beat Fraserburgh,Ayr,Falkirk,Hearts and Thistle and we are title contenders you all need to calm down.As for getting a manager with a bit of clout IN,If we couldn’t attract McInnes away form the sheep what chance do we have?Lets keep it real and secure second spot.

  5. I agree with most of the comments especially about the board saving face by appointing Murty after the Mc Innes knock back . I did not want Mc Innes either he is not good enough …ever. The financial aspect is definitely front and centre now ..the share issue if it materialises ! Will hopefully raise some capital . We will need it …Goss Herrera Alves Rossiter the List goes on all need to be offloaded it will cost..As for Murty he's a nice chap..but not a Rangers Manager in behaviour or in ability…appointed only to make do !!! It's going to be painful till the last game …They need to appoint the new man. Clarke may not want this he will return to English Football …Craig Levein …..Barry !!@ Rino Gutouso ….Help !!!!!!

  6. I think they were right to appoint him for the remainder of the season. I just hope they have sat back and not done any work to find his replacement. He has bee fantastic he really has. However I do Think Rangers need a more established manager. I don't want a manager cutting his teeth so to speak at our club. But I cannot fault the guy. We know we still need more quality players at Ibrox and a quality manager with more depth to his game. It's not Murty fault wrong time for him to in charge our giant club.

  7. Murty has been a manager for 11 games ( since being appointed on 22 Dec 2017 ) so maybe give his a break and support him. Before the relic match he had accumulated more points in the period than Brenda…before the OF everyone was so optimistic. Had we a team of men we would have seen the game out but we have young lads everywhere ( except the old useless Alves ) and I include Morelos (21) but we don't. We have Dorrans, Jack, Wallace, young McCrorie and now young Bates out injured so we have had no luck with injuries thats for sure. We need to get behind the squad and manager is we want to get to that cup final and I think that is still possible.

  8. In reply to the article I think Murty was the correct appointment at the time. The so called candidates at the time were hardly inspiring and would not have been backed by everyone. McInnes, Allardyce, Pardew, Wright, MCLeish, O'Neil etc. have all gone backwards or moved on. By giving it to Murty we bought ourselves time to see if a better candidate would emerge. Step forward Stevie Clarke. Here is a man who gets the maximum out of meagre resources. I've always thought he was a good manager and it was ridiculous when he was sacked at West Brom.
Thanks to Graeme Murty who has done an excellent job at raising the standard at Ibrox but we need a hardened seasoned man in charge.

  9. The boards to blame, especially Robertson who had a major influence by appointing the Bullfighter or should I say Bullshitter!!!
After we got rid of Pedro I said at the time I would liked to have seen big eck come in on a rolling contract or at least till end of season and I also said from day 1 that I didn't want McInnes or murty as we have to think bigger/better But once again the the board got it spectacularly wrong and as usual they are getting a free ride and fellow bears are blaming players and murty who should not have been put in this position in the first place….By the Board ????

And yes were on a run but I was never convinced or confident last week or in the future due to our Shambolic Defending which takes me back to Big eck who I believe would have Sorted this from the start….watp Helicopter 2005

  10. My god last week he should be signed on a permanent contract now after 2 defeats he has to go now. Murty was a cheap choice who has steadied a ship no more or less. Look at the number of players brough in jan on loan that decision told us the board where nevet going to leave themselves with more players a new manager doesnt want. Lets back murty till end of season 2nd is still within our grasp & a semi final still to play for the end of season merry go round will be here soon enough

  11. I totally agree with the comments that second place is paramount. But if anyone is saying that if we are successful in that, then Murty must be made permanent manager then, frankly, they know nothing about football. One needs to look at the matches one and lost. Yes, we have won important matches against sides like Aberdeen, Hibs and Hearts. I firmly believe however that our players good themselves up for these games – it was little to so with Murty's man management skills or tactical genius. Then look at the matches we've lost, particularly at Ibrox. I've no doubt, against the likes of Hamilton, Killie etc that our players were complacent. And it's the job of the manager to sort that out. He hasn't been able to do that. And that's a big concern. Similarly, he is incapable of making tactical or personnel changes when things are not going right for the team. Is any of that a surprise? No because he is a development team manager: not one with the capacity, ability or experience to be the first team manager of Rangers. And my opinion in that will not change whether we get get second spot or win the Scottish Cup! Sorry, he is a nice man but not a permanent manager of Glasgow Rangers!

  12. I Say Give Murty A Bit Longer

And then who could we get to replace him…
    Sir Walter? Billic? T.Wright?

And for those of you who are harping for Steve Clarke …Just No!

Hes a Tim, Hes a Prick and all season long hes cried like a little girl about how unfair scottish football is and how everyone picks on Killie and how Killie get nothing from Refs. 👊

  13. The appointment of Murty can't be a mistake as it was only caused by the lack of a good option .
The two managers previous were horrendous errors and now we really are in trouble as I'd suggest the board are no further forward in knowing what to do next either .

  14. While I think that Murty is doing an honest job and giving it his best shot – let’s just examine the assertion that he has steadied the ship. We’ve lost 7 games at Ibrox for the first time in over a century. Murty has been in charge for 5 of those 7 games. I don’t blame Murty – but I do blame the Board who should never put a promising youth coach learning his trade in this position in the first place.
There is a real danger that some fans are now settling for mediocrity here. Celtic aside there are players at Ibrox that are on wages greater than the whole wage bill for the entire team of some of the teams that are outplaying, out thinking, and out fighting us. The resources we have at Ibrox the rest of the SPL outwith Celtic can only dream of. We should be wiping their floor with the rest in league and cup. The fact that we aren’t is down to poor governance and sheer incompetence by the Board when it comes to the playing side. Really a rookie manager and a few loan players who can’t get into mediocre championship sides – is this good enough. We need to support our club – but we do not blindly. We have the right to criticize and demand more. Sort it Mr King or move on.

  15. I will say this first we wanted the Motherwell manager when he was doing very good now its cooling around him as the season went on,now we get talk about Kilmarnock boss Steve Clarke and he has not been in the job a full season yet,let it play out before we jump on another manager that will not be any better than the last one look we do get beat by teams and draw with teams it is nothing to do with the manager its the players we have they just not good enough for the job and Rangers simple as that Murty is doing the job with some has beens and some younger players that and just average players.
