Former £40M striker now free agent – should Rangers swoop?

There is little question that, aside the troubling aspect of defence right now, Rangers’ main area of concern is striker.

With Alfredo Morelos looking elsewhere, and struggling in the big games, while Jason Cummings has not yet asserted himself in the first team yet, not to mention the threadbare options like Kenny Miller and Eduardo Herrera as backup, Rangers really do need someone pretty special up top to really assert that position better.

We are no strangers to spectacular, earth-shattering deals – Gascoigne, Steven, Boli, and more recently Barton and even Senderos were significant captures, with varying degrees of success.

As such, could an audacious move for Jackson Martinez be on the cards?

The former £40M Colombian striker had an absolutely torrid time in China, flopping dismally after his hyped-up move from Atletico Madrid, and at age 31 has everything to prove.

If Rangers were to bring him in, at a budget suitable for both, it could give him the chance to restore his career while giving Rangers potentially, an incredible striker and one of the biggest coups in Scottish football history.

There is no reason the Famous Glasgow Rangers are incapable of signing such a star – even in the recent past on top of Barton and Senderos we’ve brought in Kranjcar, himself once a huge name.

And Martinez doesn’t have an ignominious past with injuries to blight him. He is a healthy, fairly young striker with a whole hell of a lot of proving to do and if his wages were to be modest in line with Rangers’ structure, it would be an incredible signing which could help take Rangers back where we belong.

Martinez is a free agent, and, on form, one of the best strikers around – but his current stock in the sport is at an all-time low.

Exactly the kind of moment Rangers should swoop.

  1. Its all about opinions …….Sorry, the trust with those sort foreign imports have now been completely lost, the Scottish game is just not compatible to this sort of player, not be trusted and my personal opinion, stay clear !!]

    • Aye I agree.i hope that King doesn't go there. We are not in a position to go for this striker. Unless he is willing to down his wages.

  2. Fairly young? 31 years old is a striker coming to the end of his career. I'd take him to replace kenny miller though. Would he accept 10k a week? probably not, and i doubt we would pay much more than that as he would be a risk we can't afford to take.

  3. I would prefer us to sign McBurnie from Swansea, we might keep Morelos, Cummings, possibly Ryan Hardy and Louis Moult to sign giving us the possibility of acquiring maybe a target man centre forward coming to the end of his career as a plan ‘B’.
With the likes of all the unfit midfield players returning to fitness, my main focus would be to look at getting two, maybe even three central defenders and possibly a utility full back like Hodson but a better calibre than splash out on a striker.
If Morelos, Cummings and Moult were staying for next season, I reckon with a 3-man defence, 5-man midfield and two up front we could have the squad to Winn our coveted number 55 league championship.
If we look at the shambolic start we had to the season, changing manager, etc. despicable home form, dreadful refereeing decisions and serious injuries to important players, not to mention dud players like Pena, Dalcio, etc. we might be close on Celtics tails or leading the table.
Give the foreigners a bye, especially South and Central Americans as well as Africans. Bring in players suited to our game, let’s win our domestic championship.

    • Yea – and if your granny had balls she'd be your granda. Seriously – what planet are you living on. The fact is we're 10 points behind having played a game more, and unlikely to get a license for Europe next season, due to the shambolic state of our finances. Trust mew – next year will be worse than this shit!

  4. Now that we have freed up Nikos wages, I'd take him till the end of the season, prove his worth in our final games, then make a decision.

  5. Yes! Id go for it 😃👍💙
But I want us to sign McBurnie & Grigg First.

…Id Stay Away from Louis Moult,
The championship has shown us how good he really is.

  6. Are you having a laugh. Senderos was working as a brickie before we signed him , Niko was a big name about 8 years ago and was plying his trade in the second division in America before we signed him. the other players you mention were in the David Murray era. you are crazy to think we could sign Martinez when we couldn't afford to sign Murphy in January after putting out there that was a done deal.
Dave king has to go or we will forever be buying league 1 players if we are lucky or we will be getting loan players
