Could Graeme Murty make a massive decision for Celtic?

Graeme Murty could be ready to hand a shock debut to new signing Glenn Middleton after the youngster impressed for Scotland against Spain.

With Jamie Murphy a massive doubt for the Old Firm, and Michael O’Halloran completely out of favour, the promising young winger could be set to star at Ibrox as a stunning solution to a tricky problem, should the Brighton loanee not make it.

Middleton was one of three permanent signings made in January (along with Declan John and Greg Docherty) and Norwich fans were absolutely devastated to see him go, which shows the esteem they held the attacker in, and given how much he is impressing Ibrox bosses and for his country, he could be in line for an incredible spot in the limelight as a dramatic solution in his senior’s potential absence.

It gives some idea of how good the lad is that Canaries fans did not give two hoots about losing Steven Naismith, Kyle Lafferty, Steven Whittaker, Russell Martin and even to an extent Graham Dorrans but were gutted at the loss of the left sided playmaker.

Many would argue the Old Firm comes too soon for such a raw talent, but then, we are pretty sure youngster Ross McCrorie did half decently at Parkhead at the heart of defence.

And of course, with Middleton on the left, it would cause next-to-no upheaval in Murty’s favoured formation at all.

We await with interest to see Murty’s solution.

  1. I think much will depend on the fitness of a number of players – not just Murphy. Losing Murphy would be huge blow. The current system is working so well because of the understanding we have on both flanks – with Tavernier & Candieas on one side and John and Murphy on the other. Middleton may be a great prospect but I doubt that he would have the discipline to cover when necessary in the Celtic game. It looks almost certain that the Celtic game will come too soon for Murphy – but if John and Wallace can make it then I would play them both on the left – john in front of Wallace. This would give us movement and skill going forward but strong defensive cover when we don’t have the ball.

    • Scratching my heid here at that one Dexter mate! John & Wallace haven’t played together either. If Murphy is out then Glen would be the better option period.

    • My point is Bawbag that both Wallace and John are experienced players so give us strong cover defensively – but both have speed and skill going forward so that we remain a potent threat in attack. Not sure Middleton has the experience to cover defensively in such a big game. Okay for fans to say beforehand ‘throw him in’ but we all know that he will be crucified if it’s his mistake that costs us – Myles Beerman anyone!

    • Aye I hear you on that one Dexter mate! That said we can’t judge every young player like that. Maybe that says something more about the support rather than the boys performance..

  2. Surely to God a bruised toe ain't going to keep him out all that time ffs!
John was pulled as a precaution nothing else.
Would be very very surprised if they dont both make it!!
But keep the soap dodgers guessing till KO.

  3. Aye I think both will be fit to play against them on 11th March as they wont play on Sunday if it goes ahead, we can play Wallace Alves and may be even give the young boy a run out I would also rest Windass too … We need Alves cause Martin just doesn't do it for me he does not win headers .
