Trail goes cold on Rangers target while League 1 interest gets set to leave

Article by: Ibrox Noise

It has emerged in the past 24 hours that while Northampton Town’s bid for midfielder Matt Crooks has been reportedly accepted, any lingering hopes of securing Hearts wingers Jamie Walker have been reduced to nearly nil.

The midfield enforcer signed from Accrington along with fellow Warburton recruit Josh Windass simply never got anything like a chance at Ibrox, for whatever reason, and was farmed out on loan to Scunthorpe as soon as possible.

How Rangers spent £0 on an SPL team

With promotion, Rangers’ fans had a slightly misguided belief that the Ibrox men suddenly had access to all the gold in the world. That the “Promised Land” of the Premiership would wield a steep hike in monies available and Rangers’ target market for the new season would be a huge rise compared with the ‘bargain basement’ of the Championship and other lower leagues in England.

So far, on five players and counting, Rangers have spent close to zero. That is correct; zip, zero, nada.

On Josh Windass, Matt Crooks, Joey Barton, Jordan Rossiter and Clint Hill the outlay for these players’ services has been borderline nothing beyond agent and development fees and impending wages.

You'll be stunned by new Rangers signing's release clause

With Rangers securing Accrington Stanley duo Josh Windass and Matt Crooks this evening on a four-year pre-contract, the Press Association’s Andy Newport has claimed the contract, in Windass’ case, has been compiled with a £3.5M release clause.

The deal, due to formally begin this summer, will involve a minimal training fee outlay, unless Rangers fork out a modest six-figure sum to secure the players now, but it is Newport’s understanding that Windass’ contract includes aforementioned multi-million buyout clause.

Accrington accuse Rangers of foul play, pair could join now

Accrington Stanley chairman Andy Holt last night accused Rangers of unsolicited talks with his star duo Josh Windass and Matt Crooks, while admitting there was nothing untoward about Rangers’ advances towards the Stanley pair.

News broke yesterday evening that Rangers had made moves to secure the midfielders, and Holt was extremely discouraged by the negotiations given they are with the players themselves and not with his club.

Rangers' striking target Josh Windass - a profile

With it being fairly well known that Rangers are in the market for a supplementary striker to enhance firepower in January, one of the strongest links of recent days has been Accrington’s Josh Windass.

Subsequently here is a simplified breakdown of his career to date, and what Rangers boss Mark Warburton might see in the young striker enough to take him north of the border.

Son of former Aberdeen star Dean, Windass has plied his trade in England’s League two for pretty much his entire career, brief though it has been such is the player’s relatively tender years at 21.
